Abstract  a-Si3N4 whiskers without free carbon and other metal alloy impurities have been synthesized from amotphous nanoSi/N/C powders under 0. 1 MPa N2 at 1600℃. The whiskers synthesized have meandiameter of 0. 1-0.5μm and are longer than several milimeters. The
